Trainer Tony Martin, successful in yesterday's Jewson Novices' Chase with Benefficient and sounding hoarse today, was on the scoresheet again after Bryan Cooper steered 10/1 chance Ted Veale to victory.

Ted Veale

"We started thinking about this race last year and after we had a few disappointments we decided to save him for the Boylesports in Leopardstown but things went against him.

"The ground was too soft and he travelled well to the last like today but didn't get home in the ground. Thankfully, it has all worked out today," said Martin who has doubled his Festival score to four this year.

"I was just hoping that he wasn't going to fall over at the last. Bryan gave him a great ride - he is riding with supreme confidence at the moment and, like I said yesterday, he is the new kid on the block.

"It's great to have him on your side. We have been using him for a while and you could always see the potential in him as a rider. He's a young fellow on the way up and I hope to be able to secure his services for a while. I have been fortunate enough to have Walsh and Carberry working for me for a long time but this lad now is certainly a good deputy.

"It's wonderful when it works out. It doesn't always work it like that - we had bad luck with Bog Warrior yesterday when he hurt himself coming down the hill - but it has all come right today. We have Croke Park in September and the all Ireland Final with 100,000 people - that's what it's like coming here."

"He won over a mile and two furlongs on the Flat so he was always going to have enough pace, it was a more a matter of whether he was going to get home today. He's owned by a man who was a great pal of my father's so this great.

"We celebrated last night so we were lucky to get here today! I'm booked to go home today but we might just delay that!"

Conditional jockey Bryan Cooper is turning The Festival 2013 into a personal fairytale.

Having taken the opening JCB Triumph Hurdle on Our Conor he completed a 54/1 Gold Cup Day double when Ted Veale, at 10/1, landed the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle. Cooper, 20, now sits second in the Thomas Pink Jockeys' Title Race at The Festival having ridden three winners, one fewer than Ruby Walsh.

Cooper, who rode Ted Veale for trainer Tony Martin, said: "I have to pinch myself - it's hard to believe.

"Everything went right. He travelled, he jumped, and everywhere I wanted to go I got the splits. Coming down the hill I had so much horse under me it was just a matter of where to put him. Tony told me to hang onto him for as long as I could, because in the ground he might not get the trip. He got it off to a tee - he's some trainer.

"It's a long run from the second-last to the last, but David Casey [on runner-up Tennis Cap] was giving me a great lead and I knew he would carry me to the final flight.

"After two winners your confidence is up and you tend to take gaps you might not do otherwise. I waited as long as I could on this horse, because I got there too soon on Our Conor and I didn't want that to happen again.

"At the start of the week Our Conor was the horse I was thinking most about because he was nearly favourite - to be riding a favourite in a race at Cheltenham was great, and I just hoped I could get a couple of placed horses. I came here with a few rides, but to ride three winners is unbelievable.

"I try not to listen to too much praise. If I achieve half what the likes of Ruby Walsh and Barry Geraghty have achieved, I'd settle for that."

Cooper came back splattered in mud following steady rain, and he said: "I was on a good-ground horse, but that rode pretty soft. The rain is getting in."

NICE RUN - SHAME ABOUT THE WINNER

It all, bar one thing, went perfectly for David Casey on Willie Mullins-trained Tennis Cap, length and a half runner-up in the Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle after making the running until just before the last hurdle. "I had a great run round," he said, "with no problems at all out front. He's helped me all the way and run his heart out. It was the perfect race - apart from the fact that Tony Martin ran Ted Veale."

Wayne Hutchinson, on third-placed Manyriverstocross from the Alan King yard, welcomed the rain that had set in before the start of racing. "He ran a great race," he said. "He was well handicapped on his old form and the fact that the ground had gone soft helped him."
