Irish Cavalier

Irish Cavalier, trained in Pembrokeshire by Rebecca Curtis, won the CHAPS Restaurant Barbados Novices' Handicap Chase, the closing event on day one of The Festival.

This was Curtis's fourth success in as many years at The Festival, and it also completed an 83/1 double for jockey Paul Townend, who is understudy to Ruby Walsh at Willie Mullins' yard, but who has teamed up with Curtis when available.

Curtis admitted she had never visited Barbados, let alone the winning sponsor's restaurant, but cheerfully added: "Perhaps Andrew [McIver, the winning owner] will take me there now!"

Of six-year-old Irish Cavalier she said: "We fancied him to go well today because he's been running on heavy, winter ground and he's happier on this. Despite everything, he ran really well here last time out.

"At halfway I didn't think he was going to win, but once he pulled him out wide he ran on like a train. I don't think the cheekpieces made a big difference - in these big handicaps they have to travel well through the race and he was a bit novicey, but he's learning.

"I definitely think he needs stepping up in trip, but we'll see what the handicapper thinks before making a plan. Paul Townend has been a lucky jockey for us."

Surreal feeling for McIver as Irish Cavalier gives him a first Festival winner

Irish Cavalier's triumph in the CHAPS Restaurants Barbados Novices' Handicap Chase was a first Festival winner for owner Andrew McIver.

He said: "It feels fantastic, but a bit surreal. Halfway through the race I didn't think he was going to win, and I was very surprised. And it looks like he can go further.

"Paul [Townend, riding his second winner of the day] gave him a very good ride.

McIver, the former chief executive of Sportingbet, has three horses in training with Rebecca Curtis.

"This is the best!" he said. "I've owned him for three years, and have owned racehorses for about six years. I've had Flat horses with Clive Cox, but the jumpers have mainly been with Rebecca."
