Air Of Entitlement provided a poignant finale to the Cheltenham Festival when powering to victory for Henry de Bromhead, whose stable had been rocked earlier in the afternoon by the loss of Envoi Allen following the Gold Cup.
The start itself proved something of an ordeal, the field having two or three attempts before the starter was satisfied to let them go, and the race that followed was no less eventful. A searching early pace never quite materialised and the contest quickly developed into a scrappy affair, with bumping and scrimmaging on several occasions as runners jostled for position before the race truly began to unfold descending the hill.
Joe Anderson ensured Hot Fuss was well away from much of the trouble, making early progress from the rear to secure a more prominent position, while Patrick O’Brien had Air Of Entitlement ideally placed throughout. The pair drew together approaching the final flight, but once asked to quicken Air Of Entitlement found another gear on the run-in, pulling decisively clear to score by two and a quarter lengths.
It was a performance of authority and one that secured a second Festival triumph for the mare, following her victory in last season’s Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, providing a moment of uplift for the de Bromhead yard on an otherwise deeply emotional day.
