The Plate has long been one of the Festival’s most competitive handicaps, a race that sits perfectly between the speed of the two-mile chasers and the relentless stamina test of the staying division. Run over two miles four furlongs on the New Course, it often rewards the horse who can travel strongly through the race before finding enough up the hill, and recent trends paint a fairly consistent picture of the typical winner.
History suggests a relatively clear profile. Every one of the last eleven winners had already scored over a trip between 2m3f and 2m5f, highlighting how important proven effectiveness at this intermediate distance can be. Equally striking is that all eleven had already won during the current season, arriving at Cheltenham in form rather than relying on past glories. The handicap mark is another important guide: ten of the last eleven winners were rated in the 140s, a bracket that continues to look the sweet spot for this contest.
Quality also tends to shine through in the formbook. Ten of the last eleven winners had already taken their chance in at least one Graded race, whether over hurdles or fences, suggesting this is rarely a race for the completely unexposed handicapper. Seven of the last eleven also arrived on the back of a victory, another sign that momentum can count for plenty in a race that usually unfolds at a relentless pace.
Last year Jagwar looked a standout candidate beforehand, and Jonjo O’Neill Jnr delivered the favourite with the confidence of a rider who knew he had the best horse beneath him. Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero’s star could theoretically return to defend his crown, but his connections have loftier plans in mind. With the Grand National the long-term objective, Jagwar needs to run over three miles or further at the Festival to qualify and appears much more likely to line up in the Ultima instead.
In his absence, the market could be headed by Madara, who caught the eye in no uncertain terms when last seen at Kempton. Dan Skelton’s charge is already a course winner and shaped there as though this sort of race would be very much within his compass. Skelton has an excellent record targeting Cheltenham handicaps and Madara’s ability to travel strongly through his races makes him an obvious contender if he turns up in similar form.
McLaurey is another who could make his presence felt, although his Festival target remains slightly fluid at this stage. He is expected to step up in trip at Cheltenham and holds options in both this race and the Jack Richards on the Friday. Waterford Whispers also appears on both entry lists, but this intermediate test looks the more likely destination, particularly with Henry de Bromhead already holding strong novice candidates in Koktail Divin and Slade Steel for the other race.
One who fits the statistical profile particularly well is Will The Wise. Sixth in the Pertemps Final last season, Gavin Cromwell wasted little time sending his seven-year-old over fences and the results have been encouraging. After a couple of educational runs in the spring he finished a close second to the future Grade Three winner Ol Man Dingle at Galway, before returning to the same track to defeat Prends Garde A Toi and Waterford Whispers over the same course and distance.
His subsequent campaign has offered further hints that he could be well suited to a race like this. A respectable fourth in the Troytown at Navan showed he can hold his own in a deep handicap, while his disappointing effort as favourite in the Paddy Power Handicap Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas can probably be viewed as an off day rather than a true reflection of his ability. Although he has shaped well over further, this intermediate trip may prove ideal, and Cromwell’s novice has shown he can run well when fresh.
Another interesting novice is Mambonumberfive, who could head down the handicap route after a disappointing run in the Kingmaker. Earlier in the season Ben Pauling’s charge had looked a progressive type on decent ground, stringing together three wins over fences with a fluent, attacking style.
Things did not go to plan when the ground turned heavy at Warwick in the Wayward Lad, where he struggled to cope with conditions and trailed home a well-beaten third. That effort is easy enough to forgive, particularly given how effective he had looked beforehand.
Pauling appears to have other Festival targets mapped out for some of his team, with Vanderpoel likely to head for the Grand Annual and Meetmebythesea pencilled in for the Jack Richards. That could leave Mambonumberfive as the stable’s representative in the Plate, and the way he travels through his races hints that this slightly longer trip might bring out further improvement. Novices have an excellent recent record in the race, and he would not be the first lightly raced chaser to make his mark here.
As ever with the Plate, the final field will be deep and fiercely competitive. Yet the trends point firmly toward a horse in the 140s, already proven at around this trip and arriving with solid form from the current season. Within that framework, the likes of Madara, Will The Wise and Mambonumberfive look among the more compelling candidates for one of the Festival’s most fascinating handicaps.
