One of the long-range single-figure handicap fancies for many has been Jagwar. Intriguingly, he could be joined by stable and owner-mate Iroko. Both give the impression of horses with the Randox Grand National somewhere on the horizon, and Jagwar in particular looks the type who may yet find improvement now he is being asked to stretch out fully over staying trips. The market, however, appears to have taken that view already and has priced him accordingly.
The next couple in the betting seem to owe as much to the confidence of their connections and the strength of their quotes as to anything we have seen recently on the racecourse. Handstands and Quebecois command respect for that reason, but at the prices they are not for me.

Myretown could easily revive his best form back at what might be described as the scene of his favourite crime, yet at this stage, following the five-day confirmations, the two that appeal most are Leave Of Absence and Knight Of Allen.
Both can generally be backed at around 20/1 each-way NRMB and those prices look worth securing now. If anything, I would expect them to contract rather than drift once people begin to study the form in greater detail.
Anthony Honeyball has long been among the most adept trainers of staying handicap chasers, something underlined again by last weekend’s Doncaster demolition job from Jasmin De Grugy. In Leave Of Absence he appears to have a horse who remains notably unexposed in this sphere and who should be well suited by the prospect of drying ground.
The pulled-up effort in November is readily forgiven and, set against that, Leave Of Absence has a profile that is quite compelling. It includes a commanding handicap success, a course-and-distance novice chase victory, an excellent run in a major Ascot handicap where he did much the best of those racing prominently, and a perfectly respectable effort in the Denman Chase on ground that would not have played to his strengths.
Knight Of Allen, meanwhile, still requires a few to come out to guarantee a run and retains an entry in the Jack Richards’ Novices’ Handicap Chase. Even so, he looks very much the type of improving novice who often runs well in this contest.
Handled with care to build experience without compromising a workable handicap mark, he comes from a yard that knows the score at this meeting. Jane Williams has been involved in preparing several similar types who have run well at the Cheltenham Festival before and she may well have another live candidate here in Knight Of Allen.
