Few handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival are run at a more frenetic tempo than this, the traditional cavalry charge that immediately follows the Queen Mother Champion Chase over the same two-mile trip. It is a race that rewards slick jumping, tactical speed and a horse capable of holding a position in what is almost always a strongly run contest.
Recent trends offer a useful guide to the sort of profile required. Ten of the last eleven winners had already won at least twice over two miles, underlining how important proven speed is in this race. Interestingly, ten of the last eleven also arrived without winning on their most recent start, suggesting that the handicapper often gives a chance to horses whose latest run may not have advertised their claims.
Festival experience also counts for plenty. Nine of the last eleven winners had already run at the Cheltenham Festival, while eight returned starting prices of 10/1 or bigger, reinforcing the idea that this is rarely a straightforward betting heat. Eight of the last eleven had also competed in at least one Grade One, highlighting the class often lurking beneath these handicap marks.
Jazzy Matty wins at the Cheltenham Festival again two years after success under Michael O'Sullivan - you couldn't write it ❤️

One of the most intriguing runners this year is the defending champion Jazzy Matty, who bids to repeat last season’s victory. Now trained by Cian Collins, the Doctor Dino gelding produced a memorable performance under Danny Gilligan twelve months ago to land the prize. He also boasts previous Festival form, having won the Fred Winter in 2023 when trained by Gordon Elliott.
Since that Grand Annual triumph, Jazzy Matty has been seen sparingly over fences. His only start in that discipline came in the Galway Plate, where he finished unplaced, with the rest of his outings coming back over hurdles. Collins gave him a gentle reintroduction at Thurles in January and reports the horse to be thriving ahead of his return to Prestbury Park.
“He’s in great form and hopefully the ground is drying out over there,” Collins said. “I couldn’t be any happier with him and I’m looking forward to it.
“He’s 8lb higher in the Grand Annual this year and it’s obviously going to be harder, but he loves it there. He’s a better horse there than anywhere.”
At the head of the market could be Be Aware, who appears to have been targeted at this race by Dan Skelton. A progressive novice chaser, he has the profile of a horse capable of making his mark in a contest that has often been kind to improving types stepping into open handicaps.
Ben Pauling is also expected to play a significant role with Vanderpoel. His form ties closely into last season’s Trials Day novices’ handicap chase, a race that has since proved particularly strong. Jagwar went on to win the Plate at the Festival itself, while Resplendent Grey later landed a valuable prize at Sandown.
Another to emerge from that contest with credit was Ryan’s Rocket (2nd reserve). Sent off at a healthy price, he travelled into contention and jumped the final fence with a chance before failing to see out the two-and-a-half-mile trip and finishing a weary fifth. Dropping back to the minimum distance here could prove crucial.
Fergal O’Brien’s eight-year-old made a striking start to the season when bolting up on his reappearance at Newbury, a performance that saw him backed into favouritism for the Desert Orchid at Kempton. He was still moving smoothly through the race there when a mistake down the back straight unseated Jonny Burke.
Although O’Brien has suggested that Ryan’s Rocket may ultimately be suited by further, much of his best form has come over two miles. In a race like the Grand Annual, where the pace is usually relentless from flag fall, that speed and fluency could make him a very dangerous contender from what still looks a workable mark.
As ever, the Grand Annual promises depth and drama in equal measure. With the defending champion returning, a well-fancied novice in the mix and several unexposed handicappers lurking in the wings, the stage is set for another breathless two miles around Cheltenham’s Old Course.
