There are races that confirm a suspicion, and there are those that sharpen it into something approaching conviction. At Naas on February 22, Melbourne Shamrock did the latter — and in doing so may just have booked himself a belated invitation to Emmet Mullins’ travelling party for Cheltenham.

In the familiar colours of Robert Waley-Cohen — silks that have already been carried to glory in both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National — the seven-year-old lined up for his first venture into handicap company in the Pertemps Network Group Handicap Hurdle. Sent off the 5-2 favourite, he was asked a searching question in the straight. The answer, delivered with admirable resolve under Donagh Meyler, was measured in inches: a neck to the good at the line, and no suggestion he had shirked the issue.

Mullins, never one to gild the lily, saw precisely what the rest of us had witnessed.

“It was a gritty performance. He’s been knocking on the door in a few nicer races,” he said.

There is something to be said for arriving at the Cheltenham Festival with a horse kept deliberately on ice, and Electric Mason fits that particular mould.

Chris Gordon has resisted the temptation of a midwinter spin, allowing his charge to head straight here without sight of a racecourse since November. In an era of busy campaigns, it is a notably measured approach.

The form in the book offers encouragement. He chased home Stayers’ Hurdle aspirant Ma Shantou at Cheltenham in October, shaping as though the track held no fears, before returning to Haydock on Betfair Chase day to land a valuable handicap with authority. That performance, in the autumn sunshine, hinted at a horse progressing at precisely the right time.

Gordon is quietly optimistic that the path charted since has been the correct one.

“He’s got a great chance I hope. We had a great day in the sunshine with him at Haydock and he’s run at Cheltenham before to qualify him for the Pertemps.

“It was the obvious race to go to after Haydock. I couldn’t really see any benefit of running him again until we got to Cheltenham, but he’s in very good order and we’re looking forward to it.”
