The shape of the JCB Triumph Hurdle is beginning to crystallise, and as the winter evidence mounts, a compelling narrative is emerging around a division rich in talent, depth and contrasting profiles. Once again, Ireland and Britain look set to lock horns in the Festival’s opening-day juvenile championship, with recent trial performances providing both clarity and intrigue.
At the head of the market sits Narciso Has, who has done little wrong since joining Willie Mullins and whose reputation continues to grow with every appearance. His authoritative front-running success in the Gannon’s City Recovery & Recycling Services Juvenile Hurdle marked him down as a colt of real substance. Always in control under Mark Walsh, he was never headed, jumping fluently and applying pressure throughout before asserting decisively from the home turn.
Narciso HAS done it 🥇

That performance confirmed the promise he had shown when landing a Grade 2 over the same course and distance on St Stephen’s Day, a run that prompted him to start favourite to reverse earlier Fairyhouse form with Mange Tout. On this occasion, there was no reversal required. Jack Kennedy kept the latter in close attendance, but when the tempo lifted, the response was one-sided, Narciso Has pulling clear with authority.
Further depth to the form came from Selma De Vary, another Mullins-trained juvenile, who shaped with considerable promise on her first start since arriving from France. Held up by Paul Townend, she made notable late headway through a crowded field to take third, closing to within four and a half lengths of the winner and comfortably seeing off Mange Tout for that position.
Mullins was understandably impressed, noting both the maturity and scope of his winner. “Very good performance, did it the hard way from the front.
He settled lovely in front, jumped well in front and had enough left for a kick at the end. He’s mature as well and looking at him, I think he’s going to make into a nice chaser, he’s a fine, big specimen of a horse. He was very green the first day he ran but he’s learning all the time.”
He was equally encouraged by Selma De Vary’s effort, adding: “She missed a lot of time and I think she’ll improve a good bit for that run, she was a little bit green going to the last; Paul brought her wide, he didn’t want to get involved with the others, and I think she has a big future.”
Walsh echoed that confidence, suggesting the ceiling remains high. “If he stays sounds he could be anything. He will make a good chaser - he jumped one of the hurdles down the back like a fence.”
On the race itself, he added: “He done all the donkey work but he quickened up the straight to the last and pulled away. All he does is gallop, but he has a turn of foot, for all I didn’t want a sprint so that’s why I let him go on in front.
“That was very good, certainly different to the first time I rode him. He quickened up the straight after the last and did it well.
“The way he won the last day gave me a lot of encouragement and I’ve ridden him out a few times at home and at home he’s felt a different horse since his first run.”
Those efforts have seen Narciso Has installed as a clear market leader, trading at the head of the non-runner no-bet lists with most firms, and he now sets the standard the rest must aim to reach.
Leading the British resistance is Maestro Conti, who has rapidly risen through the ranks for Dan Skelton and jockey brother Harry. Already a winner in France, he made an immediate impression on his UK debut at Kempton before stepping into Grade 2 company for the Finesse Hurdle, where he carried a 3lb penalty and still emerged on top.
That race unfolded at a searching pace, with One Horse Town setting strong fractions and Minella Yoga looming as a significant danger. Harry Skelton rode a patient race, keeping Maestro Conti well covered before producing him with impeccable timing. Spotting a narrow gap between the rail and the leader after the last, he threaded his way through and the gelding quickened decisively, pulling clear to score by two lengths.
Dan Skelton was quick to underline both the quality of the performance and the education it provided. “That was a very good ride. He did a lot wrong as Harry sat on him for longer than he was probably going to from two out until the last just to make sure he filled up. I thought it was a very good ride tactically.
“There was a lot of differences today. He ran around Kempton Park at Christmas where they were breaking track records. It was very different ground, a very different track and a different set of opposition… He has still got four lengths to make up at the last and he has done well to do so. I’m very happy with him.”
Skelton also emphasised the class and style that make Maestro Conti such an exciting Triumph prospect. “One thing about this horse is that he has a lot of style and a lot of class… I liked the way he came home here. He gave him a chance to win, and he wanted to. There were a lot of positives and he will come back here for the Triumph Hurdle.”
Another British-trained juvenile firmly on the upward curve is Minella Study, who has quickly established himself as a leading domestic hope for Adam Nicol. Unbeaten in three starts since arriving from Ireland, he produced a striking display in a Triumph Hurdle trial at Cheltenham in December, quickening clear by more than six lengths and catching the eye both visually and on the clock.
Now officially the highest-rated juvenile hurdler in Britain after an 11lb rise to 138, Minella Study brings a blend of scope, composure and raw ability. Nicol, however, is keen to balance ambition with patience, mindful of a busy early career.
“He’s come out of it really well, he came home that night and licked his bowl clean and he’s been in the field for two days bucking and kicking, you wouldn’t think he’d had a race,” said the Seahouses-based trainer.
“The one thing about him is nothing fazes him at all, he never wastes an ounce of energy worrying about things… We still haven’t properly discussed what we do next, but there is still even a chance he just goes straight to Cheltenham.”
His jumping, particularly at the final flight, marked him down as a horse with Festival temperament. “What was impressive was Ryan (Mania) only gave him a couple of flicks and he quickened into the last – how many times have you seen a horse put down at the last when they are in front, but he jumped it like a fence.”
As ever, the Irish challenge is likely to deepen as spring approaches. Willie Mullins, in particular, has a formidable record in the race and may yet unveil further ammunition, while Gordon Elliott’s juveniles are also traditionally strongest when the pressure is on.
For now, the narrative is compelling. Narciso Has brings authority, size and relentless galloping power. Maestro Conti offers polish, tactical speed and a sharp turn of foot. Minella Study arrives unbeaten, unfazed and improving fast. Cheltenham will provide the ultimate examination, but the clues are already there. The 2026 Triumph Hurdle is shaping up as a fascinating clash of styles, temperaments and trajectories, with youthful promise set against the most exacting stage of all.
