Wednesday 11th March 2026

This year’s renewal is shaping up as a fascinating clash of raw talent, future stars and emerging voices from both sides of the Irish Sea. The Bumper has long been a proving ground for future hurdlers and chasers — from Florida Pearl to King George great Cue Card — and the early lists brim with potential 2027 bluebloods.

At the head of the market is the name Love Sign d’Aunou, now installed as the early favourite following a truly commanding debut under rules at Naas. Carrying the familiar colours of Rich and Susannah Ricci, the point-to-point recruit shouldered favourite’s burden in the Aloga Equestrian (Pro/Am) Flat Race and simply left his rivals in his wake, coasting clear by 24 lengths under Patrick Mullins.

Love Sign d’Aunou was cut from 20-1 into 5-1 in the Champion Bumper ante-post lists, and in doing so offers Willie Mullins a chance to extend his record in this unique Grade 1 showcase to a 15th winner.

Patrick Mullins said afterwards:

“He was very good, he doesn’t quite show that at home. I think he’s probably relentless and has a really high cruising speed.

Jasmin De Vaux won this bumper before he won in Cheltenham (in 2024), but he’d be a very different type of horse to him.

“He’s a relentless galloper, a big strong horse.

“I’d imagine he’s a Cheltenham horse. He could be along the lines of Florida Pearl, those Cheltenham bumper horses.”

That kind of post-race endorsement from a rider who sees hundreds of potential champions every March carries weight, especially in a race where strength, rhythm and that unstinting gallop define the winners.

But this is a wide-open spectacle with several others on the move in the betting and worthy of scrutiny. Bentraghhill, often quoted around 10/1, represents the classic profile many fans covet — progressive form, strength on the flat and a hint of group-race edge to his work. The Irish Avatar and Quiryn are similarly pitched at the 10-12/1 bracket, both bringing untapped potential and lightly raced profiles that could see them flourish on Cheltenham’s unique contours. Oh My Word has also attracted attention — the Navan winner who impressed with a decisive win and now figures around 12-16/1 in the lists, a reminder that dominant displays on Irish soil often translate well to Prestbury Park gallops.

The Champion Bumper tends to favour those who have already delivered a performance of note this season; recent trends underline the value of winning last time out, especially in high-class bumpers against strong fields.

From the splashes of colour further down the lists, keep an eye on Bass Hunter, moving through mild calculations around 14/1, and Saint Clovis, both of whom sport profiles with enough pace and strength to take this sort of test in their stride. Equally intriguing are horses such as No Walkover and The Mourne Rambler, each possessing that rare blend of tactical speed and appetite for stamina that Cheltenham’s stiff uphill finish has a habit of unearthing.

What the numbers don’t always capture, though, is the raw feel of a horse with a bit of dash on the flat and a big engine beneath them — exactly the sort of attributes Love Sign d’Aunou exhibited so compellingly at Naas. And when you add the seasoned eye of Willie Mullins’ team into the mix, it’s easy to see why punters have rallied around him so early.

Cheltenham’s Champion Bumper is a race that often tells us as much about the future as it does the present. Stars are born here; careers are mapped out in stride after stride up that famous hill. Whether Love Sign d’Aunou’s sparkling start is a harbinger of bigger things remains to be seen, but for now he’s the one everyone wants to beat on what is always one of the most beguiling afternoons of the Festival.
