Ten Bob Tony produced a powerful late surge to deny long-time leader Witness Stand in a dramatic renewal.

Eight runners lined up for the Group Three contest, which was run in driving rain, and Witness Stand looked revitalised after wind surgery and the application of a first-time tongue-tie.

Billy Loughnane quickly secured the favoured near-side rail aboard the Group Two winner and his mount appeared to have the race under control as he kicked clear entering the final furlong.

However, Kieran Shoemark delivered the Ed Walker-trained Ten Bob Tony with a perfectly timed challenge and the 11-2 chance lunged late to get up on the line and score by a head.

Poet Master finished third, while market leaders Never So Brave and Alcantor were unable to make an impact from the rear of the field.

Walker said: “He needs conditions like that and it was a fantastic performance. It was actually quite easy to watch and Kieran gave him a superb ride.

“He relaxed beautifully and some of the fancied horses never really got involved, so everything worked out nicely for us.

“He won this race last year when it was run at Haydock as the John of Gaunt Stakes and we hoped he would build on that, but things never quite fell into place, mainly because we had quick ground throughout the summer.

“To be fair, he still ran a great race in the Prix de la Forêt.”

Discussing future plans, Walker added: “We’ve got to pick our opportunities carefully because seven-furlong Group races at the highest level are quite limited.

“The Forêt is his race and it’s difficult to know exactly where to go before then.

“Would we consider the Prix Maurice de Gheest if the ground came up soft? Possibly.

“There’s also the City of York over seven furlongs, but I’d probably be more inclined to try him over a mile than drop him back to six furlongs again.

“If he does run over a different trip, I’d say it will be a mile and worse horses than him have won Group Ones.”
