Choisir ranked with world's best


oasis dreamClare shares award

The Evening Standard's Clare Balding shared the racing journalist of the year prize at the 2003 Derby Awards with regional journalist Doug Moscrop of the Newcastle Journal.

Event sponsors Blue Square had made Balding their 2-1 favourite to win the award, which is voted on by more than 300 members of the Horserace Writers And Photographers Association.

Philip Hobbs was named the year's leading National Hunt trainer, Sir Michael Stoute won the Flat award with Kieren Fallon named top jockey, and Tony McCoy once again took the National Hunt Jockey of the Year award.

The George Ennor Trophy, which recognises outstanding achievement in racing, was presented to 11-times champion jockey Pat Eddery, who on Sunday ended a long and successful career in the saddle.

The winner of the International Trainer of the Year title was Pascal Bary, trainer of Six Perfections, and the award recognising Services to International Racing went to Khalid Abdullah.

  • Photographer of the Year: Ed Whitaker.
  • Journalist of the Year: Clare Balding and Doug Moscrop.
  • Owner of the Year: Jim Lewis.
