Jan Vermeer 2-1 Favourite For Irish Derby – 11 Entered 23/06/10

A total of 11 horses have stood their ground at the latest entry stage for this Sunday’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh.

Aidan O’Brien is responsible for a large chunk of the entries – with five of the field coming from the powerful Ballydoyle yard.

Jan Vermeer, who is the 2-1 favourite with Hills, looks like the main contender from the yard – who’ve also entered Cape Blanco (9-2), Midas Touch (9-2), At First Sight (12-1) and the probable pace maker – Bright Horizon (100-1)

Monterosso, the winner of the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, was supplemented for the race by his connections, and he’s rated a 4-1(2f) chance by Hills to record a quick-fire Group double.

Other interesting entries in the race include the Godolphin runner Chabal (12-1), and Jim Bolger’s Ballsax Stakes winner – Puncher Clynch (12-1).

Coordinated Cut (10-1), Carraiglawn (20-1), and Dubawi Phantom (33-1) complete the entries.

‘Johnny Murtagh holds the key to who’ll start favourite for the race,’ said Hills spokesman Tony Kenny ‘At the moment it looks like he’ll ride Jan Vermeer, but you never can be one-hundred percent sure what Ballydoyle are going to do.’

‘Monterosso is an exciting addition to the line-up, and he looks like he’ll pose a serious threat to team Coolmore.’
