Captain's Blog - 26th June 2010

Saturday morning means a couple of hours of Aussie Rugby League on the TV and a bacon sarnie to keep me company. It does not come much better than that especially after Saint Helens thrashed Salford last night to send me to bed dreaming of Grand Final Glory. In fact I rarely do dream, when I do it usually is some non-sensical rubbish that I take no notice of, indeed I had a dream the other day that the Racing Post ran a competition to find the best Broadcaster of the last four years and Nick Luck failed to win, see total nonsense.

Once the Rugby League is finished we will be heading out for a spot of shopping and then yet more Rugby League as we make our way to the Twickenham Stoop to watch the Harlequins play the Pies, otherwise known as Wigan. It should be a comfortable win for the goons, but we will be cheering on the Harlequins in the vain hope that they can find some form.

There is some excellent Racing countrywide today and Racing UK as you might expect is right in the thick of things with our coverage from a quality card at Newmarket. The Criterion Stakes is the feature event. I have crunched some speed figures for this race and here they are :-

Premio Loco – 102 (achieved 2009)
Ashram – 101 (achieved 2009)
Beauchamp Xerxes – 83
Doncaster Rover 107 (at 6 Furlongs)
Fanunalter – 76
King of Dixie – 109
Mabait – 99
Jeninsky – 74
Red Jazz – 107

The figures point to King of Dixie and Red Jazz having excellent chances. king of Dixie was disappointing last time at Goodwood but has a chance on the figure he achieved at Ascot before that. Red Jazz is a 7 furlong specialist with some consistent figures this year and has an outstanding chance. He can be backed at 5/2 whereas King of Dixie is 14/1. That looks like a very fair each way price given that he has the best recent speed figure.

At Newcastle the Northumberland Plate takes centre stage and Deauville Flyer will be hard to beat. He ran a speed figure of 106 when winning at York and he won easily. A repetition of that will be good enough to win and there is every chance that he could be even better than that. Betfred are going 4/1 which looks fair enough.

Right time for me to sign off for another week. Sweet dreams!

Today’s Selections

3:05 Newcastle – Deauville Flyer – (each way 4/1 Betfred)

3:20 Newmarket – King of Dixie – (each way 14/1 Betfred)

3:40 Newcastle – Esoterica – (each way 9/1 Betfred)
