Captain's Blog - 28th June 2010

Lets get one thing straight, it is not Capello’s fault. The blame lies fairly and squarely at the feet of the players. They are an overpaid bunch of average footballers who are not good enough to win games at the highest level. People can blame the Manager or the 4-4-2 system but our players are simply lacking in the necessary technical ability to cut it with the best teams in the world. There is not a Manager in the world who could have secured a different result at this years World Cup. Mourinho, Redknapp or whoever cannot turn our footballing Geese into Swans. The pool of English players available to any Manager are sub International standard and until that changes, the debacle we have witnessed this year will happen again and again and again. I do not wish to pick on individual players because that would be unfair, but to underline the point that we lack quality I am happy to point out that when we needed a goal and a fight back yesterday we turned to Emile Heskey, a man who scored just three goals in the Premiership last season. Finally, if the players are not technically good enough to do well in International competition that is fair enough, but the problem is compounded by the fact that they think they are the best. They have behaved like spoilt brats throughout the competition, making noises about not liking being in Capello’s strict camp. The truth is that they enjoy a champagne lifestyle at home and have too much money and when the trappings of their millionaire lifestyles are taken from them they sulk.

If you are one of those who cannot understand the Derby result and are not sure that Workforce is the real deal then it is time for you to think again. The speed figure he produced at Epsom was sensational and now the horse who beat him in the Dante has won the Irish Derby. Cape Blanco produced a massive figure when he won the Dante and he would have won or been second in the Epsom Derby had he turned up. Instead he went to the French Derby and to some disappointed. Indeed I have heard and read Pundits saying that they cannot understand why he ran so badly in the French Derby. The reason he ran badly was the fact that the ground was on the easy side and he needs rattling fast ground and he was patiently ridden in a slowly run crawl and sprint race which did not suit him. Surely now that Cape Blanco has won a Group 1 people will start to bellieve in Workforce and believe the figures, the speed figures from this years Dante gave us two Derby winners unfortunately for many this is not enough, but now that they have the collateral form that they love they will believe.

I am in the Studio today for an afternoon and evening meeting. It will be a long day, but an interesting one. I hope you have a great day and I will be back tomorrow with some more thoughts.
