Captain's Blog - 10th August 2010

A late start for me today after an all too rare lie in. This means that I am somewhat up against it time wise today and may have to be a little bit brief here this morning. I was very pleased to learn that common sense prevailed yesterday with the retirement of Harbinger. He was too valuable to risk again on the racecourse and there would always have been the worry that his old injury would prevent him from repeating his achievements of this year to say nothing of the increased risk of further injury. I look forward to seeing his progeny in a few years time and given how good he was at Ascot, a track where horses that like polytrack often run well I wonder what the chances are of him being the sire of a Dubai World Cup winner one day. Yes, I am probably completely mad but you never know.

I am working in the studio for today for what is an evening meeting from Nottingham. Seven races will keep us busy through to 9.00pm and then for me all roads lead to Huddersfield on Wednesday. We will be broadcasting from the Junction Inn there and I am proposing to drive there and back in a day which is a shed load of driving but I will be in the company of Dave Nevison and my channel editor which will make the journey pass quicker than it would if I was on my own. I am looking forward to this ground breaking broadcast for and be sure to join us on Wednesday evening it should be a lot of fun.

No joy with our selections yesterday, one of them was a non runner, which was a result, and the other bombed out big style. Not to worry today is another day and hopefully we can gain some redemption. Nottingham is always a place that I have enjoyed punting at because I have always had a view that front runners or at least horses that race prominently are always worth getting involved with. It tends to be a track where it is difficult for horses to make ground from off the pace and I will be looking for that angle tonight during our broadcast.

For now I must kick on and get to the gym before crunching some figures for tonight’s action.

All the best.
