The Breeders Cup meeting is almost upon us and the racing world is starting to look across the pond in anticipation of another weekend of top quality action.

Workforce

The UK is now regularly represented by our foremost trainers, jockeys and horses and there is a real buzz for our chances this year.

Perhaps the biggest ‘talking horse’ at the moment is Workforce, going in the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Saturday 6th November. As always, the biggest races comes with the best stories, and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained three-year-old has been tipped up to “put the record straight” for connections 24 years after connections watched Dancing Brave beaten in the same race.

The chances of Workforce winning have been derided by many shrewd tipsters following a rollercoaster season which has seen a record-breaking victory in the Epsom Derby and a superb Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but a very disappointing run in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

The feeling has been that the horse cannot string together victories and doesn’t have the mental attitude for a tough race Stateside. Combined with the poor record for Prince Khalid Abdullah-owned runners in the race which has seen all 12 defeated.

However, those looking at free bets seem to differ in this view. They have installed the horse as a short priced favourite with the current best price a very skinny 5/4. Racing manager, Lord Grimthorpe, seems in bullish mood, “I think after the King George we learned lessons about one or two things, including how to ride him and perhaps what ground he prefers”. And following a good work out on Racecousre side on Saturday they are certainly leaving nothing to chance.

So we are left with an intriguing race and a real debating point for tote betting punters as they decide if records are there to be broken or the statistics once again deliver the goods. Either way it promises to be another superb renewal.
