The bookmakers opened betting on the market on Sunday morning when they received numerous calls looking for prices on Murtagh’s replacement.

The French-based Belgian Christophe Soumillon is the 7-2 second favourite for the post, while the Iceman Ryan Moore is available at 5-1.

Kieren Fallon (7-1 from 9-1) and Colm O’Donoghue (8-1 from 16-1) were the two best backed candidates on Monday afternoon, while Hills have also received several requests for Jamie Spencer, Tom Queally and Fran Berry.

‘We received numerous requests for the market on Sunday morning,’ said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny ‘and at that stage we’d a feeling there was something going on down in Ballydoyle.’

‘Pat Smullen remains the favourite for the position, although we did see solid money for both Kieren Fallon and Colm O’Donoghue on Monday afternoon.’
