Snow becomes more widespread across the country with each day that passes with a differing degree of depth. Jack Frost skates around causing havoc enjoying his most brutal temperatures for some time, the mythical figure certainly isn’t a racing fan as his wrath looks likely to wipe out turf fixtures for some time, he has also had a good go at scuppering the all weather.

Today betting shops will prize open their doors for both Southwell and Lingfield as horses, jockeys, groundstaff, owners, trainers and punters will brave the conditions at both venues.

It may be a day to show allegiance to Sir Mark Prescott runners, he has two fair chances at Southwell. Starting with Algris, looking at his last run it hardly installs confidence only beating one home. He did start slowly and became detached at Kempton, but it is intriguing to see him drop down two furlongs and in class. Fashionable Gal deserves another chance but I would only put her in a placepot rather than select her outright.

At Lingfield there are some intriguing scenarios but no real betting propositions, I will be keeping an eye on Pocket Too at 12:45 as his hurdle form is much better than his flat form. A favourite of mine Matsunosuke is too short to support at odds-on as he always has to do it the hard way and come from behind.

POINTERS

The favourite has won four of the last five runnings of Lingfield’s 2:15

Alan Swinbank has had three winners from his last three runners and his current record is four from six with a third

Trainer George Baker has had four winners and two seconds from his last 15 runners

Jockey George Baker has ridden four winners from his last ten Lingfield rides

Ian Mongan has had ridden five winners from his last 18

Mr Simon Walker is a Lingfield specialist with five winners from his last ten Lingfield rides
