Hennessy Primed for Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster

Hennessy heads to Doncaster for the £90,000 Listed Sky Bet Chase over three miles on Saturday, January 30, with trainer Warren Greatrex looking for a big run from last season’s Grade Three Sandown Gold Cup winner.

The nine-year-old, who has been allotted 10st 11lb in the handicap and is a 16/1 shot with sponsor Sky Bet, has not run since winning the historic extended three miles, five furlongs contest at Sandown Park in April. Injury and the inclement weather have kept Greatrex’s charge off the course but the trainer is hoping the Sky Bet Chase will be the first step towards this season’s John Smith’s Grand National.
The Upper Lambourn handler said: “Hennessy’s big target right now is the Sky Bet Chase. He is in good form and I would like him to run well in that to make sure he gets in the Grand National. I have decided, just from the way things have gone this winter, that it’s probably the right time to have crack at Aintree with him. His profile would suggest that he is in the right sort of area to be having a go at that.
“He just wrenched a muscle in his back that held him up a bit and then he was due to run on New Year’s Day but I wasn’t happy about running him on ground that I felt was just a bit frozen in places, so we decided not to risk him.
“He wouldn’t want bottomless ground but at Doncaster the ground seems to be better than anywhere else. Three miles around there - it seems like a nice race in which to bring him back. He runs well fresh, so I would expect a big run and that will set him up for a couple of things later in the year, with the National the main aim.
“We know he stays, he jumps well, Doncaster is a big galloping track and although it’s probably his minimum trip, it looks like the right place to start him off at.”
Sky Bet maintained the David Pipe-trained Seven Is My Number and the Nicky Henderson-trained Duc De Regniere as its 7/1 joint favourites after the pair were allotted 11st 7lb.

The Paul Nicholls-trained Taranis, and Calgary Bay from the Henrietta Knight yard, head the handicap jointly on 11st 12lb.
County Durham trainer Howard Johnson could saddle last season’s Grade Two-winning novice Killyglen (11st 10lb), while North Yorkshire-based Ferdy Murphy has entered William Hill Trophy runner-up New Alco (11st 1lb) and Venetia Williams may be represented by Grade Three Freddie Williams Festival Plate hero Something Wells (11st 9lb).
Trainer John Quinn’s Character Building has 11st 4lb, while the progressive Exmoor Ranger, trained by Victor Dartnall, has been saddled with 11st 1lb.
Theatrical Moment, currently a 9/1 chance for trainer Jonjo O’Neill, has been given 11st 1lb, while the Charlie Longsdon-trained Far More Serious has 10st 3lb.
Tatenen (11st 7lb), I’m So Lucky (10st 8lb) and According To Pete (10st 10lb) are each towards the top of the Sky Bet market.
