Captain's Blog - 3rd January 2011

It is the final day of the holiday for most people today. It has been a long break but an enjoyable one and people will go back to work refreshed with New Year Resolutions fresh in the mind and most will be nursing a cough and a cold. I went to Tesco’s yesterday and everybody seemed to be coughing and spluttering. I must admit I was one of them over Christmas but thankfully, as things return to normal, I am feeling much better and ready for anything that is thrown at me in 2011. I hope that you are feeling top notch this bank holiday and that you found a few winners over the weekend.

Medermit

Our selection here on ther blog was Medermit who rewarded eachway support at 11/2 by finishing second. He did not win because he did not stay the two and a half mile trip which was no great suprise given that as a hurdler he was best at two miles, a return to that trip in the Arkle would be ideal and a fast run race there would suit him. If his trainer Alan King decides to go there then I would be interested in him. He is a best priced 16/1 with Coral at the moment which is fair.

I trust you have been enjoying the World Darts Championship this Christmas. I think it has been the best I have seen over the last few years. Phil taylor was knocked out in the quarter finals after having had an interrupted preparation and his performance is best forgotten as far as the future is concerned, but I do believe he is never going to dominate this game as he has done ove the last few years. He is still a fabulous player, but the gap between him and some of the others is narrowing, not because he is on the decline but because the others are improving. There has been a realisation in the game that churning out three dart averages of 95 which previously was thought to be a tremendous effort is now not good enough. A few years ago Taylor was the one posting averages of 110 plus but now other players are aspiring to and achieving those numbers. The overall effect of this is that the game is becoming better and more more exciting to watch. Taylor will be world champion again one day, but winning for him will never be as easy as it was a few years ago. The final is live tonight and I cannot urge you strongly enough to tune in.

I hope you will be tuned into today as well. We will be bringing you a seven race card from Ayr. I always have a second glance at Lucinda Russell trained runners at this venue, and with ten runners this afternoon she is set to have a decent afternoon. I think the best of them could be The Starboard Bow who made all to win on his debut at Ayr. He was a strong stayer on the flat and if affordeda soft lead today he will take some pegging back. First Fandango is the obvious danger having won at Ffos Llas last time out and he was a similar horse to The Starboard Bow on the flat. On balance I prefer the Russell runner, it was just the manner of his win at Mussleburgh that impressed me and he should go close in th opener. One word of caution though the yard boasts a current stat of 0/20 lately which is a worry. Enjoy the action from Ayr today with us on your favourite Racing Channel.

I am going to call it a day now. Enjoy your last day of rest before hectic normality returns.

All the best.
