Angus McNae

Captain's Blog - 8th February 2011

Alan King has decided to run Medermit in the Arkle Novices Chase as opposed to the Jewson Novices Chase. I think this is a sensible decision. For me this horse is best in a strongly run two mile race and that is what he will get in the Arkle. He jumps well and has plenty of speed and Cheltenham is a place where he has produced his best form in the past. Some looked to question his resolution prior to his win at Sandown but they had simply mistaken a lack of stamina over two and a half miles at Cheltenham for a lack of resolve. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his attitude and plenty to like about his Arkle credentials. Is he good enough to win? The answer is probably yes and he certainly represents reasonable each way value with Victor Chandler at 11/2.

It looks as if Ruby Walsh will be back in the saddle by the end of the week which is great news for all of us that like to see horses ridden properly. It is particularly good news for Paul Nicholls who since Noel Fehily injured his wrist has struggled to find someone to ride who not only suits his horses but his owners as well. The return of Walsh will in my opinion bring about a change in the fortunes of the yard and they look set for a profitable few months. I would be happy to back Paul Nicholls to be the leading trainer at the Festival again for the simple reason that Walsh is back, he is that good and that important to Nicholls.

gets into gear for a busy week today with a day at Market Rasen today. They stage a competitive seven race card and we will be there to bring it to you. I am not working today, instead I will be reminding myself what the Gym looks like and will also be spending some time preparing for the Meydan card on Thursday which I will be presenting with Richard Hoiles.

For now I hope you enjoy the winter sun that we are supposed to be gettig today. All the best.
