Captain's Blog - 8th April 2011

Boing Boing Boing went Denman yesterday confirming my suspicion that he is best fresh. It may seem odd but I think he tries far too hard every time he races for him to be able to put up two big efforts within twenty days of each other. Some people may think he should be retired. Rubbish I say, all he needs is a rest and will be as good as ever after it. As horses get older they are far more likely to need longer between their races than when they began their career, because quite simply their bodies take longer to recover. If you think about it we are the same, the notion makes perfect sense to me and I am sticking to my belief that he he bounced to the moon yesterday. Remember a bounce does not mean a defeat it usually means a catastropic loss of form and that is what we saw yesterday.

We had a nice 9/2 winner here on the blog yesterday in the shape of Polar Kite at Ripon where racing handily was important as it was at Kempton last night where the last five winners all made every yard of the running. Many thanks for your mails last night and your National selections. I am sorry if I seemed somewhat non commital as far as a Grand National selection is concerned, but to be honest I have no idea what is going to win. Of course it is fun to have a go at the world's greatest steeplechase, but in truth it is a bit of a lottery and my record in it is dismal. I will however try to analyse the race on the blog here on Saturday, the punting Gods love a trier!

Make sure you join us at Aintree today, it is ladies day and with the sun set to shine the place will be buzzing. Lydia Hislop and Graham Cunningham will be your hosts providing the expert analysis and I will be in the booth lending a helping hand when needed. I hope you enjoy our coverage and back a few winners as well.

I will be back tomorrow with a look at the National. You never know I may just find the golden ticket.

All the best
