Angus McNae

Captain's Blog - 20th June 2011

A quiet Monday on with just all weather action at Kempton to keep us busy this afternoon. I am heading to the booth to be part of our coverage which begins at 2.00pm. Be sure to join us.

I did not manage to stay up and watch the final round of the US Open last night, to be honest come 10.00pm I could not keep my eyes open, but Rory got the job done in what was little more than a lap of honour. He was so far clear going into the final round he would have had to play as badly as me to get beaten and that was never going to happen. More importantly for me Lee Westwood finished in front of Luke Donald to land my cheeky matchbet at evens. I am not sure I enjoyed the roller coaster ride as I watched Donald and Westwood's scores come in over the four days. I think this is because I am so used to backing horses and thus knowing my fate quickly, in this case it took four days to decide if I was a winner or not and it felt like seven! Not to worry, I have some money to go to war with at Kempton today now.

It is a tremendous time of year for sport and the momentum is maintained over the next fortnight as Wimbledon starts today. I am not averse to waching a bit of tennis as the mental side of the game interests me as does the obsession of the British public with Andy Murray. He comes into this year's tournament in good form, having just won at Queens, and looks to have a decent draw, which will see him meet Nadal in the semi finals. Now I do not want to ruin Wimbledon for people but surely his tournament is highly predictable. He will play well, raise all our expectations and then with great expectation we will all watch him play Nadal in the Semi and there he will capitulate to and lose heavily leaving a nation of tennis fans deflated and with a weird sense of deja vu. I will be happy to be proved wrong this year.

I am heading to the studio shortly for my day in the booth and I wish you well with your punting today.

All the best.
