Captain's Blog - 1st August 2011 Mick Easterby gave an enlightening interview on after winning the Stewards' Cup with Hoof It on Saturday. The gem of information that he gave came halfway through the interview when he talked about training his horses. He felt that the art of training lies in avoiding the temptation to work horses too hard. He likes to keep his horses fresh and does not feel the need to gallop them hard at home to see what sort of form they are in. He understands that, for some, this temptation is hard to avoid.
In saying this he is telling us that training is as much about feel as it is about weights and measures. Coming up to a big race it must be so tempting to give a horse a strong gallop to see what sort of form the horse is in, but to do so is often counter productive. It really was interesting stuff from Mick who is always good to listen to. We had a very enjoyable day yesterday at my daughter's christening. The weather was ideal and a good time was had by all. We hosted a BBQ in our garden and it was great to catch up with some old friends. We were still sat outside chatting with some guests at midnight and although I am a bit bleary eyed today I really enjoyed what was an important day for our daughter. You also learn something every day and yesterday I learnt that using a BBQ properly is a fine art. In my haste to get the food on the table I had the heat too high early on in the cooking process, but some skilful intervention from my brother-in-law prevented a disaster. I am heading to work later today as we are covering an evening meeting from Carlisle. This late start will give me a chance to start clearing up the debris after yesterday and sorting out the mess that a fox has made of some bin bags overnight. I do not remember inviting him to the party! Right, time to get on with the clearing up. All the best.
