Tanya's Blog - 18th August 2011

The ground is being tended as I peer out of the press room window, around 20 ground staff are meticulously filling divots across the course of the final furlong. Rain is forecast later and the temperature has dropped significantly. The hacks are arriving gradually for day two, some are worse for wear, others are bright eyed and rubbing their hands together in the hope for another rewarding day.

Even with a greying sky the grass looks lush, but punters yesterday left battered and bruised, a punting recession, much was left behind as many waded in, blindly following the euros which shortened Seville and Await The Dawn, don’t get me wrong tens of thousands of euros would have been needed to shorten the York betting ring.

Sea Moon drifting out to 7-1 on Betfair shocked the on-course bookmakers and gave out the wrong message to those interpreting.

There are drifters because the horse is just not fancied and there are drifters because the weight of money on just one horse and Sea Moon was the example of the latter. Such examples are a rarity and come but a couple of times a year.

York’s betting ring will be defiant today and there could be some tremendous value. I have to admit my form recently on horses has been deplorable and golf as you well know through this blog has got me out of trouble. Kanaf yesterday found yet more trouble in running and I think he would in an empty paddock.

On to today CROWN DEPENDENCY is probably my one and only bet, he was extremely unlucky behind Requinto and ok he will be very short for such a big field but he should help lift the depression.

Of sneaky outsiders I like FAREER, I know there is a big handicap still in him and the ten furlongs at Glorious Goodwood was too far for his stamina. Back to a mile and it should be a place at least. VITA NOVA was incredibly unfortunate at Haydock and it is time to make amends in the Yorkshire Oaks. As for HAWK MOUNTAIN he should have run much better than he did in the Shergar Cup, Nick Luck is entitled to have something to cheer about with this fellow and celebrations begin just after 4.50.
