Captain's Blog - 3rd September 2011

A 7/2 winner has given us some momentum going into a busy sporting weekend.

The two big races today could not any more diverse in their make-up. The Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes looks set to be dominated by So You Think who is odds on and should win easily whereas thew Betfred Sprint is a hugely competitive event in which a good few horses have decent chances.

Both are fascinating in their own ways though and we at Racing UK are delighted to be able to bring you the big sprint from Haydock.

Earlier this week I stated here on the blog that Delegator was the value in the race given his win at York earlier this year, his freshness compared to some and the likely fast ground. All that reasoning remains sound but this morning the rain has arrived and should it come down in significant amounts my enthusiasm for Delegator would be significantly reduced and there is also the possibility that connections will withdraw him from the race should it get really wet. A win for Delegator is now weather dependant and that is something over which nobody has any control.

My selection today is Smarty Socks at Ascot. I thought he ran a blinder at York last time where he was held up last in a race that was steadily run. Despite that he ran on strongly even though isolated in the niddle of the track. He ultimately finished second posting a good speed figure and that is his third eye catching run in a row. He has run with credit at Ascot before and today's big prize is well within his grasp. He will be my only bet of the day and I will be backing him each way at about 6/1. A day away from the office for me to enjoy today and I will be heading out to see some friends for a BBQ at lunchtime. Lets hope that the rain stays away from me and Delegator. Have a good weekend.

Today's Selection

Already advised - Betfred Sprint Cup - Delegator 10/1

3.15 Ascot - Smarty Socks (each way 6/1 various firms)
