Captain's Blog - 15th September 2011

I have so far identified three horses that I think are worth following for the National Hunt season. Just seven more to go folks and here are two more for you to think about as the hedge hopping season draws ever closer.

Montbazon is trained by Alan King who I think is set for a decent season. Reports I have received following a recent open day at his yard suggest that the Barbury castle team are very happy with their team this year. Montbazon was very impressive when winning a valuable bumper at Doncaster. He was then second in the valuable Aintree bumper which in truth he should have won. He has a high cruising speed and according to his trainer has already jumped ''around 200 hurdles'' on their schooling ground. He looks like a two mile horse to me because he has plenty of gears and travels so well in his races. He may be aimed at a Listed bumper before going hurdling and is a very exciting prospect. There you have horse number four of 10 - Montbazon.

Mille Chief

Number 5 of 10 is another Alan King trained horse in the shape of Mille Chief. he has been lightly raced having only had 14 starts under rules. Last season he won a competitive handicap hurdle at Sandown by six lengths before narrowly beating Celestial Halo in the Kingwell Hurdle where he had a hard race and thise exertions took their toll in two subsequent outings at Cheltenham and at Ayr. It may well be the case that he will not stand too much racing, but he is a class act as his rating of 158 implies. Whether he is up to being competitive in a Champion Hurdle is open to doubt, but he would only need to improve 6 or 7 pounds to be right in the mix and such improvement is possible given that for much of last season Alan King's horses were out of form. Horse number five is Mille Chief.

OK we are half way there now. Here is a reprise of the five horses identified so far.

1. Keys
2. Hidden Keel
3. Crack Away Jack
4. Montbazon
5. Mille Chief

There wll be a couple more tomorrow here on the blog.
