Captain's Blog - 8th October 2011

I have just watched England lose to France in the Kick and clap World Cup. In truth they were pathetic, missing tackles and failing to control the ball when they had territorial advantage. So ends their jolly down under during which they have hardly covered themselves in glory either on or off the field. At least Wales are in the semi-final I suppose.

Not to worry the proper stuff is on later today when St Helens take on the Leeds Rhinos at Old trafford in the Superleague Grand Final. It should be a tremendous game and I cannot wait.

Before then there is plenty of tremendous action at Newmarket this afternoon on what has been dubbed future Champions day. Whether we see a future champion or not is open to conjecture but there are certainly some horses of great potential on display and the Cesarewitch adds a competitive and valuable handicap to the mix. I am happy to admit that I have not even had a look at the Ces because from a punting point of view it is just too hard. You could do 5 hours work and still not get anywhere near finding the winner thus the time is best utilised elsewhere. This does not mean I will not be watching because the race is one of my favourite handicaps and is a tremendous spectacle.

My selection today is a simple one and it comes in the Rockfel Stakes. Pimpernel was an impressive winner over course and distance last time and the speed figure she ran for a two year old was sensational. As long as she does not recoil from that mass effort I believe she will win the Rockfel today. She did us a right turn when she won last time and I am not afraid to go in again.

I hope you have a peaceful and profitable weekend. Come on you Saints!

Today's Selection

4.25 Newmarket - Pimpernel (7/2 Ladbrokes)
