Captain's Blog - 6th March 2012

Finally the whip rules are back to where they should be, in essence we are back to where we were before this whole sorry saga began. Discretion is the name of the game for the Stewards now as it used to be. All we need now is an apology from the BHA for dragging this sport through an embarassing period in its history. Of course they will not apologise, but they should and to do so would go someway towards eliminating the elitist image that they have carried for so long now. The inabliity to apologise when you are wroing is at best ignorant, at worst arrogant and surely we do not want our governing body to harbour either of these two devisive characteristics.

Every day now there will be breaking news concerning the forthcoming Festival. Today we have learnt that Peddlers Cross will swerve the Arkle and will now head to the Jewson instead. I may be completely wrong, but I detect that there are some very negative vibes emanating from the McCain yard about this horse. Apparently he has not been able to school much and they felt that his jumping would be put under more pressure over a shorter trip. There are obviously some doubts about whether Peddlers can give of his best and I could not back him with your money. He may outclass his rivals on the day which he is entitled to do, but if he was spot on surely they would have gone for the Arkle, after all he was runner up in the Champion Hurdle last season and whilst I can see why they may be scared of Sprinter Sacre you should never run away from just one opponent.

I hope you managed to watch the special yesterday with Ruby Walsh who proved yet again that he thinks deeply about the sport and most importantly understands horses. This intelligence is backed up by his ability in the saddle which is founded upon being a tremendous judge of pace, for within the understanding of pace lies the key to being a brilliant jockey and there is no doubt he is the best in the business.

I am at home today, but will be back in the fray tomorrow when I am presenting the evening coverage from Kempton Park with my old mate James Willoughby. Your emails would be most welcome at the usual address of studio@racinguk.com.

OK folks that is it for another day. See you tomorrow.

All the best.
