Tanya's Blog - Wednesday 1st August 2012

Now that was an experience. I just spent the best part of an hour trying to get various hair products, gel, mousse and spray washed out, plus over 40 hair clips. That’s what it took to wear a hat on Tuesday’s Channel 4 Racing programme.
Hard graft and plenty of time was spent doing a fashion feature on the programme regarding what hairstyles suit hats, which meant by the time I got back to the press room I couldn’t type my words of wisdom to your good selves.

Goodwood was far from Glorious for the punters yesterday, even though you may have taken first blood with Chachamaidee. It would have been a slow drain straight back into the bookmakers’ coffers over the remaining races. A signal that the ground is changing back to a more sounder surface is taking its time to readdress the form books.

The turnover in the betting ring was very poor - a backed horse at Goodwood is not the same as a backed horse at York. For example it would take a three figure bet to shorten one at Goodwood, even with the backbone of the exchanges, whereas at York it takes a four figure sum or considerable multiples. So the prices kept changing and that’s why odds seemed to contract violently.

As for the St Leger pretensions for Noble Mission, the one stat that I found yesterday was that of the last eight winners of the Gordon Stakes to go on to run in the St Leger four have won, one has finished second, two third and a fourth. Camelot won’t have it all his own way.

We all know Frankel runs today but he’s just a luxury for the eyes. I’ll be concentrating on the rest of the day and at the time of writing last night on Ghurair was the best backed horse of the opening two days! He was impressive at Newmarket but Olympic Glory ain’t half bad! Not really a betting race either.

Ted, (bound to be a great movie, by the way and worth seeing) or Orsippus as he is better known, could provide me with a winner. In his career he can boast winning a Grade One race at Aintree as well as posting two thirds at the Cheltenham Festival and some fair form on the flat. It all helps that Kieren Fallon is on board just as he was when the pair won at York. Then later on I will have a speculative bet on Last Shadow, in a very open race he seems a very large 20-1.

Remember after the Open I wrote that I wanted to be on Geoff Ogilvy and Bubba Watson on their next outing, well they both will turn out at Bridgestone in the World Golf Championship. I know Tiger has won there seven times, but my fancies are both priced silly to one, because of Tiger’s participation.

Then I hope most of will be enjoying the Olympics. Sadly, and perhaps ashamedly, I haven’t seen much and couldn’t tell you what’s happening yet if you asked me about NFL training camps…the updates on those have been compulsive viewing and reading. I can’t wait for the season to start.
