Tanya's Blog - Thursday 2nd August 2012

The biggest cheer of the press room yesterday was when the British rowers glided across the line for a gold medal. Rapturous applause ensued, the next biggest cheer was when Goodwood put a jubilant Bradley Wiggins on their big screen draped in a Union Jack (call the engraver for BBC Sports Personality of the Year). Don’t tell me Olympic fever hasn’t gripped a nation. The one consolation for racing is Frankel got a name check on BBC5 Live.

The betting ring was a bit forlorn and lifeless for the duration of the Sussex Stakes. I sense if St Nicholas Abbey does appear as Frankel’s adversary in the Juddmonte International that won’t apply to York. Still for those that came through the turnstile that caught sight of their equine hero and are satisfied if not ecstatic about the end result.

The other drama relating to Goodwood was Trade Commissioner drawing stall 21 in the Betfred Mile on Friday. It used to be called the Golden Mile, but with a ludicrous draw like that it has taken the shine off his chances. No surprise he drifted and on arrival at Goodwood early this morning I now discover he is a significant non-runner!

As for today and my selections, I’m gutted about one disappointing run and one faller yesterday, which doesn’t bode well for the rest of the week. The betting hasn’t been any guide at all. I even forgot to enter the HWPA tipping competition and ironically and in hindsight I did myself a favour. Yet my boys approach the tee in America later today (Geoff Ogilvy & Bubba Watson).

On to Goodwood day three, and look out to see if Ryan Moore is fit to ride as he has the important job of steering Estimate. If not someone is going to get a plum spare ride! All roads lead to Doncaster for her if she can cope with her rivals at 3.45. Before that I intend to rely on Johnny Murtagh’s excellent Goodwood record and Saddler’s Rock, who should provide the winner in a 1-2 for Ireland with Simenon in second? I wish. There is the little matter of the Gold Cup winner to contend with!
