Captain's Blog - Monday 6th August

Having backed the London Broncos to beat Salford in the Super League on Saturday I was drowning my sorrows with a cold pint of lager at half time with the Broncos losing 28-6 and playing like they did not care. I wandered out of the bar at the start of the second half to watch my bet get well and truly smashed up.

Then early in the second half the Broncos scored and two minutes later they were in again. Hang on a minute suddenly I had a slim chance of getting something out of the game. Salford seemed to have come out for the second half thinking they had the game in the bag; they had put the cue in the rack and now all the momentum was with the Broncos. With another score the Broncos seemed to grow in confidence, they had belief now and so did I.

The Salford team had their heads down, were arguing amongst themselves and the crowd, who were roaring the Broncos on. That included me, I was getting vocal now and as the Broncos hit the front at 30-28 I had to check the scoreboard twice to make sure I was not dreaming. By the time the final whistle went the Broncos had won 40-28.

What an amazing turnaround in fortune in the space of 40 minutes. I have never seen a game where one team lead after the first half by 22 points and then lose the second half by 34 points. I was delighted of course, but on reflection could hardly believe what I had seen. It just goes to show that in sport you should never give up whether playing the game or betting on it. For the sake of my health I could do without many more of those.

My selection today is Gunner Will in the 4.30 at Kempton. This horse is consistent and has threatened to win at this level for some time. He has met a weak contest here and under the super-confident Richard Hughes he can get the job done on the Polytrack this afternoon. I may even pop along to Sunbury to watch with my family as we all have a day at home today and if the weather is good it will be an enjoyable day out.

I hope you enjoyed our coverage from Goodwood this week. It was a marathon stint for all involved at Racing UK and I trust that their efforts kept you entertained though the week.

Have a good day folks!
