Captain's Blog - Friday 14th September

Our two big-priced each-way pokes yesterday produced mixed results. Gamilati was placed at 9/1 returning a profit but Gallipot was beaten a head for third place at 16/1, denying us a decent place payout.

Today I am keen on Mac's Power in the 4.05 at Doncaster. He is a horse in good form, ridden by a man in blinding form in the shape of Jamie Spencer. More importantly this horse loves Doncaster. This is his track and a big-field sprint suits him ideally as he needs to be ridden patiently.

He travelled well at Haydock last time before finding seven furlongs stretching his stamina. There is no doubt that he is a quirky character, but Jamie Spencer knows him and I would expect Spencer to be very patient and pounce late. If you follow me in and back him it will be a roller coaster ride, but that is what we are in this game for.

I am heading to the studio shortly as I am on duty today for with Andy Richmond as my expert guest. Andy will hopefully chisel out a few winners for you at Sandown and of course we have action from Chester as well. This will keep me busy during the afternoon before I head home for a night in front of some top class Rugby League.

John Dunlop has called it a day. He will retire at the end of the season after a superb career where many top class horses passed through his hands. He was a patient trainer, who was able to nurture a horse's career with great skill. The family name will continue to appear in your racing papers courtesy of Ed and Harry and as good as they are John really was the Daddie and will be impossible to emulate.

Time for me to get off the sofa and get on the road.

All the best.
