Captain's Blog - Thursday 11th October
I am not going to go on about the USADA 1,000 page report relating to the Lance Armstrong doping allegations for it is painful for me to do so. I have no shame in admitting that Armstrong is a hero of mine and it will take a long time to come to terms with a report that seems to have finally tarnished his reputation.
I am going to start reading the report today and as painful as it will be it may be somewhat therapeutic for me. I will say this though, however guilty Armstrong may be let us never forget that many of those cyclists who testified against him were dopers themselves, but in testifying against Armstrong they seem to have developed a whiter than white reputation. They have assuaged their guilt and will feel better for it, but they have no reason to be proud of themselves.
My selections today, yes there are two, are as follows. My number one selection is Robert The Painter in the 5.40 at Ayr. This horse should be backed each-way. He was narrowly denied at Hamilton last time out on very soft ground, so conditions today will be no bar to a big run. The main reasons for backing him, however, are that he has run some speed figures that make him well-treated and he is coming back in trip, which is an overdue move. Last time he got to the front going well, but found very little under pressure. Some may put this down to him being a bit of a rogue, I disagree. He has not been getting home over nine and ten furlongs and now back to seven furlongs he is something to bet on.
My other selection is Frequency in the 3.40 at Ayr. He ran a lot better than his finishing position last time suggests and was a cosy winner the time before here at Ayr. There is no doubt that he is a somewhat mercurial character, but he is in good form at the moment and looks well treated. I am not as keen on him as I am on Robert The Painter, but even so he should be backed each way. Have a cheeky each-way double if you are feeling lucky.
Yesterday I put together some speed figures for the Cambridgeshire meeting and in truth they were unremarkable. I will be doing the same for the Future Champions Day at Newmarket this Saturday, which I will suspect will throw up some interesting figures, if so, you will hear about them right here on the blog.
All the best.
3.40 Ayr - 2* Frequency (each way )
5.40 Ayr - 5* Robert The Painter (each-way)
* If I have a strong view about a selection I will always make that apparent and I scale the confidence I have in my selections. One is minimum faith and 10 is maximum bet stuff.
