This 50-1 shot is worth putting in your NagMe account

The sectional times told us a lot about the Sussex Stakes and once again they are very revealing with regards the action on Thursday.

First up is a horse to put into your NagMe account from the opening contest won by Broughton. The horse is Buckstay. He was held up and keen in the early stages of the race this 50-1 shot fired three impressive furlongs between the four furlong pole and the one furlong pole before weakening as a result of the effort exerted in the final furlong.

(See the Turftrax sectional times to the Gordon's Handicap here)

From the four to the three he clocked 10.88 seconds, from the three to the two he clocked 10.85 and from the two to the one he clocked 10.90.

Those three impressive furlongs caused him to weaken and clock a 12.81 final furlong.

His jockey was clearly keen to make up his ground from the four furlong pole and the horse responded with some impressive fractions.

If his effort had been timed better with his jockey waiting longer before delivering an effort he would have finished closer. While he is not one to go overboard with he could pop up at a decent price in a less competitive handicap.

The Lille Langtree Stakes was won by Wild Coco and the sectional times reveal that she won the race with a turn of foot.

(See the Turftrax sectional times for the Lillie Langtry Stakes here)

A 10.67 furlong between the three and the two pole put the race to bed and for a stayer she has a rare turn of foot. That said the performance of Alta Lilea should be noted. She made her effort a long way out. She ran hard from five furlongs out before getting tired at the two pole and eventually came home in a relatively slow final furlong of 12.85. She was quickest between the five and the four pole (12.11) then much the quickest between the four and the three (11.18). From the three to the two she matched Wild Coco (10.68) and then she was a spent force.

She clearly made her effort prematurely and she would be interesting under a more patient ride if she took on Wild Coco again.

The Artemis Gold Cup was a race that clearly favored those that raced up with the pace. The sectionals need to be analysed in accordance with the undulating topography and with that in mind they do not reveal anything else particularly revealing.

(See the Turftrax sectional times to the Artemis Gold Cup)

The race was run at an even gallop and Brown Panther was best placed strike for home whilst many of his rivals were trying to make up ground from the back.

The sectionals show that from the four pole to the furlong marker horses that had been held up such as Cavalryman, Caucus and Mount Athos fired decent splits, but so did Brown Panther who had simply been afforded a better track position than a good number of his rivals.

Quite simply in an evenly run race the place to be was close to the pace and Richard Kingscote amply displayed his ability to judge pace in this contest. He is underrated.

Red Avenger was an each-way success for us yesterday in the opener at Goodwood. I know he did not win but we secured the each-way part of the wager to turn over a profit. Each-way a pleasure, as they say.

The card today is as competitive as ever but I though that we may get some mileage from climbing aboard the equivalent of a racing roller coaster by backing Stirring Ballad each-way in the Betfred Mile. Shame he is a non-runner.

I'm guiding the ship from the comfort of the studio today so do send in any emails to [email protected].

See you here again tomorrow.
