Medicean can be just what the doctor ordered

Wednesday provides an important role, raising awareness for the Injured Jockey's Fund with a little help from the industry, Doncaster racecourse and the Northern Racing school. Great to see the betting available for the race so early, despite this my sharpened pin hasn’t bin decisive enough to land on a selection. The sight of the retired jockeys having another crack is a joy and hugely popular.

The first day of the Ladbrokes St Leger meeting is extremely tricky to the extent Medicean Man is just a token selection with no real conviction.

Borderlescott gave a heartening run in the Beverley Bullet on August 31 when finishing third to Stepper Point and the heavily backed York Glory. Sentiment would hope he wins and if he did it would lift the roof at Town Moor.

The same would apply to Tangerine Trees, it is great to see so many crowd pleasers in one race. Last year saw Sole Power beat Jwala in the Scarbrough Stakes, look what they went on to achieve in 2013, a King’s Stand and a Nunthorpe Stakes.

Why Medicean Man? Well providing there isn’t much rainfall the ground will be perfect, in June he beat Jwala by a length at Haydock. Then after a couple of moderate runs, he showed a glimmer of his old self when running on at Glorious Goodwood behind Moviesta. He does have a trait of being slowly away but that is against Group 1 opposition, he shouldn’t get too far behind in this field.

Monday’s Ladbrokes St Leger press lunch at the Landmark Hotel was a bit like my old school days, plenty of friends, easily distracted and didn’t learn anything. Forgive me the latter isn’t quite true. Aidan O’Brien was particularly bullish about the future of Australia, stating that he could be the best he’s ever trained. As for the St Leger runners I sensed confidence behind Cap O’Rushes, Foundry and Galileo Rock.

Tuesday has been spent cutting the grass and researching stats for Doncaster this week, while trying to watch all the racing. The best result of the day was the giant Kit Kat which was given to me for doing the lawn. Where's the kettle?
