Buick Can Continue Fine Form at Doncaster

Justineo and Judge ‘N Jury gave us a good start to the St Leger meeting at Doncaster yesterday. If I was sensible I would take the profit and squirrel it away and not look for any more bets this week. That is not my style though and today gives us an opportunity to press home the advantage we gained yesterday.

My Nap selection is Les Gar Gan in the opening contest at 1.40. This horse should have won a Nursery at Hamilton last time out. She found all the trouble going and was most unlucky. I do not make a habit of backing horses who have not had things go there way on previous starts, but Les Gar Gan has plenty in her favour - that last run aside.

She won at Ayr on soft ground, which is important considering Wednesday's conditions and she also ran very well in a red hot Nursery at York.

Her mark of 74 definitely underplays her latent ability and she looks like something to bet on in the opener. The booking of Silvestre De Sousa is a positive and she should be backed to get us off to a winning start on day two of this excellent meeting.

My second selection will be of interest to those of you who like to play at bigger prices. Thunderball in the 4.25. On recent form this horse has little to recommend him, but two factors override anything else. Firstly he loves Doncaster. He has won on Town Moor twice over today's trip of six furlongs. Secondly he has to have soft ground to give his best and he will get that today.

Those two reasons alone make me happy to back him each-way, but add to the mix the fact that his last win came over course and distance on soft ground off a mark of 91 and he now races off 88 and you have something to bet on. I really like his chances of making the frame and you never know he could just win.

My third selection is also an each-way poke in the form of Ben Hall in the 2.40. This horse is taking a big drop in class after running in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and then the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Prior to those efforts he won a  maiden at Haydock in good fashion and being by Bushranger he should appreciate the easy conditions.

Another plus is the fact that William Buick rides. Yesterday I highlighted his 23% record at the track and he had two winners there yesterday. This could be another one.

Angus's Thursday tips:

1.40 Doncaster: Les Gar Gan at 100-30 with bet365

2.40 Doncaster: Ben Hall each-way at 8-1 with Bet Victor

4.25 Doncaster: Thunderball each-way at 11-2 with Bet Victor
