Trained in France by Criquette Head-Maarek, the Sheikh Joaan Al Thani-owned filly is unbeaten in five starts and secured a stunning five-length triumph in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp.

Treve saw off strong opposition from Sky Lantern, Moonlight Cloud, Novellist and Al Kazeem, and also takes the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly award, again ahead of Sky Lantern, with Just The Judge, Chicquita and Talent the other nominees.

Moonlight Cloud claimed the Cartier Older Horse award. Trained by Criquette's brother, Freddy Head, the five-year-old mare is unbeaten this year and secured three more Group One victories to her impressive CV. There is also the prospect of further glory as she heads out to the Longines Hong Kong International Races next month.

Novellist, Al Kazeem, Declaration Of War and Farhh were the other Cartier Older Horse nominees.

Magician
This year’s Breeders’ Cup and Classic hero Magician (3c Galileo-Absolutelyfabulous, by Mozart) was named the outstanding three-year-old colt of 2013.

The Galileo colt was saddled by Aidan O’Brien to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas in May and – after a break of over three months – he reappeared at Santa Anita to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf on November 2.

J P Magnier, whose parents jointly-own Magician, collected the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award.

“Obviously it has been well publicised that this horse had a few issues with swimming through the year so a big well done has to go to Aidan and the team at Ballydoyle for the good job to enable the horse to go from a three-and-a half-month lay-off to the Breeders’ Cup,” said Magnier.

“As you saw, Ryan Moore gave him a great ride and well done also to Joseph (O’Brien), who won the Guineas on him.”

The other nominees in the Three-Year-Old Colt category were Toronado, Dawn Approach, Trading Leather and Ruler Of The World.

Kingston Hill

Five years after Paul Smith collected a Cartier Award for Mastercraftsman, jointly-owned by his father Derrick, he received his own Award at the 2013 ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Tuesday night.

Appropriately it was Mastercraftsman’s son Kingston Hill (2c Mastercraftsman-Audacieuse, by Rainbow Quest) who achieved the prize, the 2013 Cartier Two-Year-Old Award, after a fantastic few weeks which culminated with victory in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

“Two months ago this horse didn’t even have a name. But he has since broken his maiden, won a Group 3 and the Racing Post Trophy and now he has won this Award, so it’s incredible,” said Smith in his acceptance speech.

“The success is due to a number of people – firstly, I’d like to thank everybody at Kremlin House – particularly Gay and Jackie Jarvis. Secondly I’d like to thank Andrea Atzeni, who has ridden this horse with such confidence throughout the season. And of course I’d like to thank the inspired training of Roger Varian.

“Back in 2008 I was honoured to be asked by the Coolmore ‘lads’, as they have come to be known, to accept this very same award on behalf of a horse who is very close to my heart, Mastercraftsman. It makes this award even more special that Kingston Hill has helped propel Mastercraftsman to the top of the first-season sires’ list.”

Chriselliam, who capped off a tremendous first season with victories in the Shadwell Fillies' Mile at Newmarket and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf, was given the award for Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly.

Lethal Force scooped the accolade for Cartier Sprinter after recording consecutive Group One victories in Royal Ascot's Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the Darley July Cup at Newmarket. Clive Cox's speedball saw off opposition from Society Rock, Gordon Lord Byron, Slade Power and Sole Power.

Estimate

Her Majesty The Queen's Estimate, who won the Ascot Gold Cup, was named leading Cartier Stayer ahead of Altano, Tac De Boistron, Brown Panther and Red Cadeaux.

Footage of Her Majesty being presented with the prize at Buckingham Palace on Monday from Arnaud Bamberger, Cartier UK's executive chairman, and Cartier's racing consultant Harry Herbert, was shown on Tuesday.

"Thank you very much indeed and it's very nice to accept the award on behalf of Estimate, who did all the work," said the Queen, who indicated her Sir Micahel Stoute-trained star could stay in training.

"That's very kind. Estimate is sitting in a field at Sandringham now having a rest and watching the deer and things like that. Perhaps she'll come back into training next year.

"I shall be thrilled to keep that (the Cartier Award trophy) and have it as a memento. I was just looking at it and thinking it could join all the trophies we have at Ascot. We have all the trophies. I have actually managed to win the Gold Cup, which is unusual."

Jim Bolger was awarded the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit for 2013. The Irishman's decorated racing career began in the 1970s and encompassed unbridled success as a trainer, owner and breeder. Aidan O'Brien and Tony McCoy were amongst those who learned their trade under the master Coolcullen handler.
