Kick the bookies over the touchline

The first day of Royal Ascot yielded a profit here on the blog with Solow winning the Queen Anne and our two lays of the day in the form of Able Friend and Make Believe were both beaten.

I think today looks a whole lot more difficult, but at least we have some units to play with. That said it is a day when it may be best to tread carefully and wait for better opportunities later in the week. A couple of each -ay selections is how I am going to play today and they are probably worth coupling up in an each-way double.

The Royal Hunt Cup is where my main bet of the day will be placed. I really like the chances of Ayaar for Luca Cumani and Frankie Dettori. This horse won the Spring Cup at Newbury in great style and displayed a high cruising speed and a sharp turn of foot. Despite having to race off a 6lb higher mark he still looks really well treated.

There is another important point regarding his chances and that is his draw in stall one. Yesterday the King's Stand Stakes and Windsor Castle Stakes were races that horses drawn low dominated. In the case of the Windsor Castle this was partly a pace rather than a draw bias, but I think being in a low stall may well be an advantage in a race where they look sure to split into two groups. Ayaar should be confidently supported each way at the widely available 11-1.

My second selection is in the Listed Sandringham Stakes at 5.35. I like the chances of Touchline. This filly put up her best effort at Ascot last time out when finishing behind Sperry and course form should not be underestimated. She is also by the sire Exceed and Excel and his progeny go really well at this track and love fast ground on turf. Indeed the Coventry Stakes winner Buratino is a son of that aforementioned sire. With that in mind Touchline clearly has conditions in her favour and at 8-1 with Paddy Power she should be backed each way.
