As always Goodwood was amazing, even if the weather wasn’t. The new press room in the underbelly of the stands is a winner, despite the few expected teething problems. I initially struggled for power to my computer but I rectified that with a bit of ingenuity – I just moved desks!
After all the furore of the weekend and Speculative Bid and then Tuesday’s issues with Humidor it is only now that I’m able to sit back and take in some me time. I haven’t had a chance to mope over Bubba Watson’s loss in the Canadian Open, which cost me four figures, or Johnson Wagner failing to finish in the top five – I won’t be backing him again!
I digress, and back to Goodwood. The action came fast and for me nearly head on, such a good vantage point I have when stood by the rails in the betting ring. Trade was quiet, and the only bet I did hear about was a £5000-800 on Tupi though I’m sure there were many others.
Wind and umbrellas don’t mix, and although there was light rain many of the bookmakers refrained from putting them up. They could have acted as a punter shield, though, with two of the first three favourites winning.

Toormore impressed me with a sturdy victory in the Qatar Lennox Stakes. Over to you Solow as he was three places in front of Toomore in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot.
Birchwood could not find a way through in the Qatar Vintage Stakes before enthusiastic and optimistic quotes came through for Galileo Gold for the 2000 Guineas.
Astronereus just didn’t have the acceleration to go past Blue Wave in the Summer Stakes, while he would never have seen Forgotten Voice. Still, all roads lead to York and the Betfred Ebor.
There was a steady start in the betting ring, which should get an injection of excitement on Wednesday.
It helps that the first race, the Victoria Racing Club Goodwood Stakes is a flag start in front of the stands. Just who will win? Let’s hope it is either last year’s winner Teak, or Sir Mark Prescott’s William Of Orange.
Highland Reel ought to be too classy for his Gordon Stakes rivals but how about the tough Medrano, though he had is just rewards recently in the Glasgow Stakes.
Bigstone in 1993 was the last French raider to win the Sussex Stakes, Solow is a phenomenal horse who hasn’t received the recognition he deserves of seven straight wins. Perhaps victory in the feature race of the meeting would earn him such.
Super Sprint second Field Of Vision could be a quirky, yet speculative, each-way in the Fairmont Molecomb Stakes at a silly price.
Accession has been putting in some big runs in handicaps of late and deserves one of his own.
