Mulrennan can be a Moviesta
There have been plenty of hard luck stories this week at Goodwood.
T'was ever thus folks, and if you back a horse that gets a bad trip you simply have to take it on the chin.
What is more switching wide to get a clear run and thus see daylight a long way from home does not always suit every horse.
Some like to be covered up and gather their momentum from challenging between horses. My Nap selection on Friday is a hold-up horse and he needs delivering late, so not only will his jockey need a steely nerve and a good deal of luck, but we as punters will need to ride the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune as well.
Tom Marquand is the man, who I am trusting to do the right thing on Magic City in the Betfred Mile.
He has a wide draw in stall 15 to overcome, and he will need to be brave and sit and suffer for as long as he dares, but if he does he may well hit the jackpot.
This horse loves the track, and he was third in this race last year.
A furious early pace and a brave ride should at least see him make the frame and he certainly has the ability to win. He should be backed each-way at 14/1.
My next best is Moviesta in the Qatar King George Stakes.
He won this race in 2013 when trained by Bryan Smart and now with Edward Lynam he can win again.
He would have gone very close to winning last year if he had not hung badly to his left in the closing stages.
His jockey Paul Mulrennan will be well aware of what happened last year and will have derived plenty of confidence for today from his mount's excellent effort when third at the Curragh last time out. I cannot see him finishing out of the frame and at 13-2 is a cracking each-way bet.
Muthmir will be all the rage in the same race, but I would urge a degree of caution as far as he is concerned. He is becoming a little disappointing, largely because he is refusing to settle in his races. At this track I can see him being very keen as they run downhill after a furlong or so and it may lead to him failing to see out his race again. I would not recommend that we lay him, as he is a class act, but I certainly could not back him to win.
Angus McNae's Friday Goodwood tips:
3.10 Goodwood: Magic City each-way 16-1 generally available
3.45 Goodwood: Moviesta each-way at 13-2 generally available
An each-way double on the two selections
