B Fifty Two can down rivals at Doncaster
On Thursday I suggested that following certain jockeys and trainers with a good record at Doncaster was potentially a decent angle and the following results at the meeting so far vindicate this view.
The jockeys in question were Jamie Spencer, Andrea Atzeni and William Buick. The trainers were John Gosden, Roger Varian and Charlie Hills.
Look at the winners from tnis select group on Town Moor this week.
Show Legend (Atzeni) 25-1
Cotai Glory (Hills) 11-4
Realtra (Varian) 25-1
Gretchen (Gosden) 5-1
Mr Lupton (Spencer) 10-1
California ((Gosden) 5-2
Blue Wave (Spencer) 10-1
Curbyourenthusiasm (Spencer) 7-1
Pallasator (Atzeni) 9-2
I am not claiming these as winning selections, merely pointing out the performance of those with the best strike-rates at the track.
The Ladbrokes St Leger on Saturday looks to be in the grip of the Aidan O’Brien team, but for me is not a race to get heavily involved in.
I am tempted to lay Storm The Stars, given that he has had a really hard season and his wayward tendencies may well be a sign that he has had enough for this campaign.
A small place lay would be the recommendation, with his Great Voltigeur rival Bondi Beach the most likely winner in my book.
My main bet of the day will be B Fifty Two in the Ladbrokes Portland Handicap at 2.35. He was unlucky when finishing second at Haydock last Saturday, but he flew home when in the clear.
His last win came off a mark of 96, from which he won comfortably over today's trip at Chester.
Now he gets to race off a 3lb lower mark and is clearly in good form.
He also fits into my jockeys and trainers system as he is trained by Charlie Hills. He should be backed each-way.
Doncaster dominates the domestic action this weekend, but there is some tremendous racing at Longchamp on Sunday in the shape of the Arc trials, which you will be able to see on Racing UK.
While they are not always races to bet on they carry a good deal of significance as far as the Arc itself is concerned. The obvious star on show is Treve in the Prix Vermeille.
At the beginning of the season I suggested we back her at 5-1 for an historic third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and nothing that has happened in the interim has dulled my confidence.
In fact given her two facile wins this year she looks poised to grab her rid Arc in October.
I suspect she will win the Prix Vermeille, but defeat would not be fatal to her chances in the big race as Criquette Head-Maarek knows this filly inside out and will have her spot on when it matters.
I will not be going in again at 2-1, but I firmly believe she will win the Arc again whatever the likes of Jack Hobbs bring to the table.
Angus McNae's Saturday tips:
2.35 Doncaster: B Fifty Two each-way at 7-1 with bet365 and Paddy Power
3.45 Doncaster: Storm The Stars place lay on Exchanges
