McDonald can weave his magic at Goodwood
Librisa Breeze was an 8/1 winner for us here on the blog on Saturday, giving us some ammunition to go to war with this week.
I am hoping that Mark Johnston can add to his tremendous record in the opening contest on day one of the Glorious meeting at Goodwood - the Matchbook Betting Exchange Stakes (Handicap).
He has won four of the last ten renewals and looks set to add to that 40 per cent strike rate with Revolutionist.
This progressive individual finished a very good third to Sir Isaac Newton at Royal Ascot before seemingly failing to handle the rather unique racing surface at York.
He would not be the first horse to bomb out at York before resuming normal service.
He was impressive in winning the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar where he was always prominent before staying on strongly for a decisive victory.
I expect him to be ridden close to the pace by the world class James McDonald. He will have to contrive a decent trip from stall 13, but if anyone can it is him.
The gifted New Zealand rider is also on Dutch Masterpiece, my strong each-way fancy in the five-furlong Weatherbys Private Bank Stakes (Handicap) at 4.20.
Dutch Masterpiece is not easy to get right, but he is a smart sprinter on his day and just 1lb higher than when winning at Ascot in October.
Finally, for those wanting an interest over the five days, McDonald is way too big at 16/1 to win the Racing UK-sponsored jockeys' title at Goodwood.
Angus McNae’s Goodwood Day One selections
2.00 Goodwood: Revolutionist at a general 16/1
4.20 Goodwood: Dutch Masterpiece each-way at a general 12/1
