The History of William Hill Online Casino

William Hill is one of the best-known and most respected online gambling and casino operators in the world. It is also one of the few online casinos and sports books that have a strong presence in land-based locations across United Kingdom. It is virtually impossible to find another operator of the same magnitude that can brag about a similar track record as WH. The company was founded back in 1934 and it continued to grow, changing hands many times before it was listed on the London stock exchange in 2002.

Two Decades of Excellence in Online Gambling

William Hill is now one of the UK’s best casino sites online, its meteoric rise gained further traction in the last decade. Since 2008, their online casino division is powered by Playtech an Israeli software company and a leader in online gambling. Before that, those who signed up for a real money account here would play mainly games developed in-house. This proved to be an inspired decision, as the number of clients has increased and the number of people playing their casino games followed an upward trajectory.

As a bookmaker, William Hill caters mostly for players in the United Kingdom, but accepts international punters. It has the headquarters in the UK and also offices in Gibraltar and the Republic of Ireland. They are the largest operator in these countries and this provides punters with access to a broad spectrum of sports and horse racing events. The bookmaker has leveraged the immense experience of its land-based gambling and it continues to run successful betting shops. At the time of writing, they own more than 2000 such gambling parlors and the number has remained virtually unchanged in recent years.

William Hill is Active Outside the UK

The online gambling operator focuses on the UK market, but it has a loyal community of players beyond national borders. They offer casino games, bingo, poker and skill games to an international audience and since 2009 their online games division is based in Gibraltar. William Hill had offices in both Italy and Spain, but they decided to pull out from those markets in 2009 and 2010. Meanwhile, they expanded to Nevada, to take advantage of the favorable gambling laws in the only US state where betting is legal.

William Hill continued its online expansion, while also consolidating its presence in Australia in 2013. They acquired Sportingbet, Centrebet and Tom Waterhouse, yet five years later they decided to sell their local business to Crownbet Holdings. The Australian adventure ended in 2018, but on the same year they began preparations for entering the New Jersey gambling market.

On the domestic front, William Hill remains one of the most important sponsors of horse racing competitions. For a brief period of time, the company was the shirt sponsor of Malaga CF, a football club playing in the Spanish first division. In the United Kingdom, the bookmaker sponsors the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award, which celebrates brilliance in sports writing.
