Former Grand National Owner Trevor Hemmings Honoured With Stamp Set

Three-time Grand National-winning owner, Trevor Hemmings, has been honoured with his own set of unique stamps, issued by the Isle of Man Post Office. The collection went on sale before this year’s Randox Grand National, won by I Am Maximus.

The collection is still available and includes images of Hemmings’ three Aintree winners, as well as three other popular chasers.

Trevor Hemmings’ Life

Trevor Hemmings played a significant part in that popularity. The Woolwich-born businessman made his early fortune through construction businesses, having worked as a bricklayer while studying business at night school. In the early 2020s, the former Preston North End football club owner was rumoured to be worth more than £1bn.

As well as construction companies and football clubs, Hemmings once held a major stake in Blackpook Tower and was also a highly successful horse racing owner.

Hemmings worked with Grand National winner Specify’s owner, Fred Pontin, in the 1970s. Pontin joked that the youngster would never win a Grand National trophy of his own and promised to leave Hemmings his. However, Hemmings did go on to collect trophies of his own. His first came in the 2005 Grand National when 7/1 favourite Hedgehunter came home at the front of the pack. Hedgehunter, who would go on to finish as runner-up in the 2006 event, was trained by Willie Mullins, who has just gone on to pick up his third Grand National win in this year’s event.

In 2011, Hemmings partnered with trainer Donald McCain Jr, son of legendary Ginger McCain, to win his second trophy. Ballabriggs was ridden to victory by Jason Maguire and won the 2011 National in an impressive 9 minutes 1.2 seconds.

A few years later, in 2015, the owner returned to Aintree with the Oliver Sherwood trained Many Clouds. Leighton Aspell rode the 25/1 shot to victory and cemented Hemmings as an icon in the sport, as he became the first owner to win three Grand Nationals.

Honouring The Hemmings Legacy

Sadly, in 2021, Hemmings passed away, although his family has continued his legacy, running horses under his green, yellow, and white stable colours.

He remains one of only three owners to have officially collected three Grand National trophies, and the Isle of Man Post Office is celebrating his achievements with a commemorative stamp set.

Isle of Man Stamps and Coins General Manager, Maxine Cannon, said of the owner: “Trevor’s achievements in horse racing were extraordinary, driven by a love for the sport and enormous respect for everyone involved.”

Meanwhile, broadcaster and former Champion Lady Rider, Clare Balding, said, “Winning the Grand National was always a dream for him and to do it with three different horses was the ultimate achievement.”

The stamp collection shows how horse racing is deeply rooted in British culture, proving almost as popular as football and as significant a part of British betting. There are now even horse racing-themed slots available, with games like Big Horsey Fortune and Gold Horsey Winner sitting alongside other popular games like the Eye of Horus slot.

The set includes six stamps, each one with a different chaser. As well as his three National winners, the stamps also feature Albertas Run, Vintage Clouds, and Cloth Cap, with the latter named for his favourite headwear.
