Ebor Festival preview: Ombudsman v Constitution River set to headline four days at York

York’s showpiece meeting runs from 19 to 22 August, with the Juddmonte International shaping up as the race of the season
York’s Ebor Festival returns from Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 August, four days of world-class Flat racing on the Knavesmire worth close to £7.5 million. The meeting stages four Group 1s and Europe’s richest Flat handicap, and while the whole week rewards attention, everything builds towards Wednesday’s opener.
Ebor Festival 2026: the Juddmonte International
The Juddmonte International is a genuine clash of the generations. Ombudsman, trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by William Buick, returns as defending champion and the joint-highest-rated horse in the world. He has reportedly worked with real purpose in the build-up. Standing in his way is Constitution River, the French Derby and Coral-Eclipse winner who tops the three-year-old challenge under Ryan Moore.
Andrew Balding’s Item, a dual winner at the track this season, looks the chief home danger, with the likes of Zaydann and Almaqam adding depth. The same card features the Great Voltigeur Stakes, a long-standing St Leger trial, and the Group 3 Acomb.
Ladies’ Day and the Yorkshire Oaks
Thursday is Ladies’ Day, headlined by the Yorkshire Oaks. Kalpana and Minnie Hauk head the early market for the fillies-and-mares highlight, though Joseph O’Brien’s Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh shapes as a threat to both. The Group 2 Lowther Stakes gives the season’s leading juvenile fillies their moment.
Nunthorpe day: the sprinters take over
Friday belongs to the sprinters. The Nunthorpe, over the minimum trip of five furlongs and worth £600,000, sees last year’s winner Asfoora bid for back-to-back honours against a strong international cast, headed by the American raider Bacio, from the Wesley Ward yard, and Japan’s Satono Reve.
Ebor Saturday: City of York and the Ebor Handicap
The festival closes on Saturday with a heavyweight double. The Group 1 City of York Stakes over seven furlongs precedes the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap itself, the richest Flat handicap in Europe, run over an extended mile and three-quarters. Kizlyar, Daiquiri Bay and Hopewell Rock feature among the early fancies for a race that produced Ethical Diamond 12 months ago.
As usual, final declarations, the going and confirmed riders are published on the morning of each day, so it pays to check before racing. Coverage runs across all four days on ITV and Racing TV.
