Juddmonte International 2026: verdict and best odds
Nine were declared for York’s £1.5m showpiece, but the market has eyes for only two, Ombudsman and Constitution River.
The Juddmonte International, the highlight of the opening day of York’s Ebor Festival, goes off at 3.35 on Wednesday. It is a £1.5 million Group 1 over an extended mile and a quarter, live on ITV and Racing TV. It has the look of a genuine clash of the generations.
The field
Nine were declared, though Pride Of Arras was later withdrawn, leaving eight. Ombudsman, last year’s winner and officially the highest-rated horse in the world on 132, breaks from stall one under William Buick.
Constitution River, unbeaten this season for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore, is drawn seven and receives 7lb weight-for-age as a three-year-old. We test that margin against a decade of data in our 7lb Question analysis.
Andrew Balding’s Item, twice a winner over course and distance, is the pick of the rest from stall two. Both principals have a stablemate pacemaker in the line-up, Action for Constitution River, Devil’s Advocate for Ombudsman, so a true gallop is assured.

The verdict
Three horses matter here, and the case for each is different: class for Ombudsman, upside for Constitution River, value for Item.
Ombudsman
This is class against progress, and Ombudsman brings the class. He is three from three this season, and franked that form with a wide-margin win in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. He is also a course-and-distance winner with the best jockey in the race on board. Rated the world’s number one, he sets a standard the others have to reach.
Constitution River
The three-year-old is the obvious threat and arguably still improving. Unbeaten this term, he added the Coral-Eclipse to his French Derby, and the weight-for-age scale hands him 7lb from his older rival. For what it’s worth, he also has stall seven to Ombudsman’s stall one. If there is a horse capable of turning the champion over, it is this one.
Item: the each-way angle
For those looking beyond the big two, Item makes the most appeal. He is two from two over course and distance and returned to form when winning the York Stakes here last time. At double-figure odds he is a live each-way alternative.
