Racing week ahead: Sprint Cup countdown at Haydock
Rain in the forecast could rewrite the market before Saturday, with several fast-ground horses under threat.
The Betfair Sprint Cup dominates this week’s agenda, and Monday’s Confirm and Supplement stage will bring the field into sharper focus. The Group 1 goes off at 15:35 on Saturday 5 September over Haydock’s straight six furlongs, carrying a guaranteed £400,000, with £226,840 to the winner. Runners must hold a BHA rating of 80 or higher when confirmed.
An open market
Unlike most years, there is no clear-cut favourite this time. A group of contenders needing fast ground currently leads the conversation: Comanche Brave, Coppull, Satono Reve, Division, Big Mojo and Lake Forest. That list comes with a catch attached.
The weather problem
Rain is forecast for the north west of England in the run-up to Saturday, and that could change everything. The connections of both Comanche Brave and Coppull have already said publicly that their horses want quick ground. If the rain arrives on schedule, this shortlist may look very different by Friday.
The in-form raider
Coppull, trained by Clive Cox for owner-breeder David Armstrong, arrives with strong claims. The three-year-old ran in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup and was placed in the July Cup this season. He then backed it up with a win in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on 15 August.
The course specialist
Kind of Blue has a habit of turning up at Haydock and going close. James Fanshawe’s runner was second in the 2024 Sprint Cup, beaten a head. He was second again in 2025, this time beaten a length and a quarter.
Fanshawe has confirmed he plans to run again, particularly if rain softens the ground. The market has already started to move his way, with his price shortening from 25/1 to 10/1 this week.
