Every St Leger winner since 1776 — Doncaster racecourse from Victorian era to present day, with a 1776-2026 timeline

The St Leger has produced a winner almost every year since 1776. Below is the roll of honour, built for reference and updated each September with the latest name added, alongside our full 250-year history of the race.

Where it all started

The first running took place on 24 September 1776 at Cantley Common, Doncaster, a sweepstake for three-year-olds run over two miles with just six runners. The race was not officially named the St Leger until 1778, in honour of its founder.

The winner was Allabaculia, owned by the Marquess of Rockingham, ridden by John Singleton and trained by Christopher Scaife. She was a filly of unknown maternal breeding who was mistakenly recorded as a colt, and only given her name years later.

Rules, disruptions and renamings

Geldings have been barred from the race since 1906. Through two world wars, the St Leger kept running under different names and at different tracks:

  • September Stakes, Newmarket (1915–1918)
  • Yorkshire St Leger, Thirsk (1940)
  • New St Leger, Manchester and Newmarket (1941–1944)
  • Wartime St Leger, York (1945)

The race also left Doncaster for York in 2006 while its home course was being rebuilt, and for Ayr in 1989 after subsidence closed the track. All of these substitute runnings count in the official record, a distinction covered in more depth in our Triple Crown analysis.

Two names stand out across the centuries. John Scott trained sixteen St Leger winners, a record unlikely to be threatened. Among current jockeys, Frankie Dettori remains the name most associated with the race in the modern era. Aidan O’Brien has emerged as the dominant modern trainer, with nine wins including three in a row from 2023 to 2025.
