Ayr Gold Cup 2026: result
Pellitory won at 12/1 after heavy rain delayed the whole card by an hour.

Pellitory, trained by David O’Meara and ridden by Danny Tudhope, won the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup at 12/1. He beat Tuco Salamanca by half a length, with Flash Harry and Fine Interview third and fourth. It was O’Meara’s third win in the race, and Tudhope’s second.
A day disrupted by rain
Racing was thrown into doubt hours before the first race. Heavy rain hit Ayr on Saturday morning, with 8.5mm falling in under an hour. Standing water appeared on the track near the finish line. Two separate inspections followed, and the card was delayed by an hour. The Gold Cup itself kept its advertised slot, going off at 3.43pm.
How the race was run
Pellitory was drawn centrally in stall 16, but Tudhope steered him across to join the bigger group racing down the far side. That decision proved decisive. His stamina, already well proven over seven furlongs, told on the heavy ground in the closing stages. “This race was on the bucket list,” said Tudhope afterwards. “I’ve won it twice now.”
The draw and the day
Ayr’s stalls can sit on the stands side, in the centre, or on the far side, and this year they were placed centrally. Pre-race trends had pointed to the stands side on soft ground, and Flash Harry and Fine Interview, both racing there from high stalls, duly ran on well for third and fourth. But it was the far-side group, not the stands side, that produced the first two home.
Our own trends piece this week argued that the stalls position on the day matters more than any fixed rule. Today’s result made that case for it.
